Under 3,000 Monthly Listeners? The Algorithm Can't See You. Your List Can.

Industry estimates put an artist with 1,000 monthly listeners in Spotify's top 2%. If you're below that line, discovery isn't coming to you. But there's a channel where your listener count doesn't matter at all.

Under 3,000 Monthly Listeners? The Algorithm Can't See You. Your List Can.

Here's the number nobody puts on the motivational posters: industry analyses estimate that crossing 1,000 monthly listeners puts you in roughly the top 2% of artists on Spotify. The vast majority of tracks on the platform never even clear the 1,000-stream threshold where royalties start counting.

If you're an independent artist under 3,000 monthly listeners, that's not a personal failure. It's how the machine is built.

The cold-start problem is the whole problem

Discovery algorithms reward engagement they can already see. Listeners generate signals, signals generate placement, placement generates listeners. If you're starting near zero, you're not in that loop, and no amount of "release consistently and hope" puts you in it. The industry advice is unanimous on this point: breaking out of the bottom requires traffic the algorithm didn't give you.

The channel where your listener count is irrelevant

A DJ deciding whether to play your track doesn't check your monthly listeners. A radio host doesn't care that you're new. What they care about is the music: whether it reaches them, and whether responding to it is easy.

That's the entire design of Promoly's private-list system:

  • You build an owned list of DJs, radio, and press contacts. It's an asset that compounds with every release, and no platform can take it away or re-rank it.
  • You send tracked private links: pre-release, direct, no feed to fight through.
  • You get back real feedback from named tastemakers. Plays, downloads, and written reactions you can actually use, from people who play music for a living.

None of it requires an audience first. It requires a track worth playing and a list worth sending to, and the list is something you build, not something you wait for.

Start where you can actually win

Your first thousand listeners are the hardest ones the algorithm will ever make you earn. The promo list is how independent artists have always shortcut that wall: person by person, play by play, with feedback that tells you what's landing before release day.
